The western
sector of the park is aptly called Canaima and is located
on a beach in the Carrao River. This area contains many tepuys that can
be observed from land, rivers and air. Its natural beauty has inspired
both mystery and art. It is also home to a wide variety of fauna and flora.
The tepuys are flat topped mountains that the Pemón consider the
home of the gods. The largest tepuy in the area is the Auyantepuy
with 700 km2 and almost 2.400 meters height. It is from this mountain
that Angel Falls drops 1.000 meters spectacularly to
the rain forest below. All of this setting is considered one of the best
natural attractions to Venezuelans and foreigners alike.
To reach Canaima we will fly for 1 1/2 hours either from Ciudad Bolivar or Santa Elena de Uairén. From Canaima our trip continues by curiara along the Carrao river, the base camp for Angel Falls, lies at the end of a narrow river canyon. |
